Plastic cooling components age
Thermostat housings, water pump assemblies, and coolant flanges use plastic that becomes brittle with heat cycling. On a car with some years on it, a small coolant loss is worth finding rather than topping up.
Carbon, on the direct-injection-only years
Where an engine injects only into the cylinder, no fuel passes the intake valves and deposits accumulate on them. A rough cold start or a misfire code on a higher-mileage 2.0T is a familiar story with a known answer. Later 2.0T engines added port injectors alongside the direct ones and are far less prone to it, which is why the engine code matters before anyone quotes a cleaning.
